Djembes are suited to a warm environment, so try not to leave your djembe in the cold as it will damage the skin. Before playing always remove watches, rings and bracelets.
Your skin can be kept in good condition by regular cleaning, which can be done by lightly shaving with a razor, oiling the head is also recommended by some people, olive oil and Shea butter are the ones I have heard about.
The wood can tend to develop mild cracks, and also some bad ones!. Some people recommend using linseed oil on the wood, which I have tried and seems to work ok, but make sure you take your time with it, hardware stores can be a good place to ask for wood treatments, just make sure it is not something that will effect the skin or the sound of the drum.
If you dont already have a padded bag, get one!, otherwise make sure to cushion the head in whatever bag you may use.
I stock padded djembe bags and you can order them here, .
Skins, Rope, Rings, Djembe Repair Kits available!.Skins are from Guinea and are excellent quality. So whether you are looking to fix one up or want to maybe make your own from scratch, just send an email and let me know.
